The collection consists of twenty letters, written by Union soldier William H. Mickle to his wife Oleavia and other family members. These letters were written in the summer of 1864 during the Atlanta Campaign, primarily while Mickle was stationed near Marietta. Throughout the summer of 1864 Mickle continued writing through the battles around Atlanta then across the state and into Savannah that December. His writings tell of the progress of the campaign, discussing key figures and locations such as General Joseph Hooker, the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge, and the entrance into Savannah. The collection consists primarily of Civil War correspondence between Private Orra Dusenberry and his friends and family members, as well as letters between Private Lawrence D. Smith and his sister. The collection also includes a copy of Zina Dusenberry: Fact and Fiction : Material Relating to Elfrieda Hochbaum's Unpublished Novel, The Deer. Other materials include Orra Dusenberry's school papers and genealogy research regarding Private Smith's military service. A family tree of the Northrup family, of which the Dusenberrys and Smiths are a part, is also part of these genealogy papers. Consists of one letter written by Mrs. Margaret Bass, a hotel keeper at Perry House in Columbus, Georgia, to a Mrs. Semmes. The letter was written during the Chattanooga Campaign in the Civil War, which was a series of battles that took place from September through November 1863. Mrs. Bass writes that wounded were brought to town from Tennessee and that horses were taken from the local citizens for General Bragg's soldiers.

Although undated, the letter is believed to be from 1864 because this was the only time during the Civil War that the Troup Artillery was stationed at Raccoon Ford. This collection contains approximately 40 wartime letters written by the Blasingame family, including Confederate soldiers with the 54th Georgia Infantry. Civil War letters originate from the front lines in Richmond, Virginia, and Savannah, Atlanta, Fort Macon, and Marrieta, Georgia. This grouping includes a partly-printed parole for John S. Blasingame out of Macon, 1865, in which Blasingame is sworn under oath not to bear arms against the United States of America, give any information, or do any military duty whatsoever until regularly exchanged as a prisoner of war. Other materials in the collection include family correspondence from 1893-1894 and 1909 and 2 small photographs.

The collection consists of letters Camden Evans wrote to his wife and her father in Columbus (Ga.) from 1862-1864. He wrote from numerous camps in towns including Tupelo (Miss.), Murfreesboro (Tenn.), and Ringgold and Dalton (Ga.). In his letters he complained about how badly privates were treated and the lack of food and clothing. He asked Mr. Laney to bring him a boy to wash his clothes and forage for food, and he constantly tried to arrange for a furlough or a substitute. He gave his opinions of Generals Grant, Johnson, Bragg and Hardee. By May 22, 1864 he was near Atlanta and described having no clean clothes for three weeks, and being on picket duty for 24 hours without relief. By July 12, 1864 he had learned of his son Bobbie's death. His last letter is dated July 17, 1864. There is one letter from Emma to her husband and several letters from her after the war to her mother. In these she mentioned her second husband Steve Smith, her daughter Daisy, and a move to Birmingham (Ala.)

Colonel Olmstead writes to Captain E. P. Lawton to inform him that Major General David Hamlin of the Federal Army sent a communication demanding the immediate surrender of Fort Pulaski to the forces of the United States at Tybee Island. Olmstead informs Hamlin that he sent word he would not surrender, and shortly thereafer the Fort came under attack, which continued throughout the night. Cut off from relief, Olmstead eventually yields the fort.

The collection consists of correspondence, Army clothing and roll book, writings, and photographs. The letters were written 1862-1865 among members of the Short family. Most letters are between Joe and his wife Nannie in Buena Vista, Georgia. He frequently advises his wife about financial matters and the operation of his farm, but also describes the battles and his view of the war. January 23, 1863 - "...will never forget the scenery after the fight. It seemed as if the most terrible hurricane had swept over the earth." July 31, 1863 - "I am enlisted for life or until the yankees are whipped." "They are fighting for plunder, we for our homes, wives and children." Her letters tell of family matters and their son William Bascom "Billy." In a 1914 letter, L. M. Spinks remembers their time together in the war and tells of his life now in Texas. There are also several letters from his brother John Robert Short (1837-1920), who was in the 9th Georgia Battalion Artillery, Co. C. A personal account of the war was written by William Joseph Short when he was 90 and lists locations of his camps and the main battles he was in - Murfreesboro (TN) on July 14, 1862; Perryville (KY) on October 8, 1862; Murfreesboro (TN) on December 31-January 2, 1863; Chickamauga (GA) on September 19-20, 1863; and Lookout Mt. (TN) on November 22, 1863. There is a speech by William Bascom Short on the the unveiling of a Confederate memorial in Buena Vista (GA) in 1916; a notebook listing the roster of Co. G and clothing issued during 1864-1865; and two photographs of William Bascom Short and his wife Mollie. Transcripts are included with most letters.

The collection consists of the papers of the Carlton, Newton, and Mell families of Athens, Clarke County, Georgia from 1814-1932. Contains mainly correspondence of Henry Hull Carlton, Benjamin Mell, Edwin D. Newton, John Hamlin Newton, and other family members. Of particular interest are eleven letters from James Ryder Randall to Edwin D. Newton and Civil War letters (1861-1864) of Henry H. Carlton while serving in the Troup Artillery in Savannah, Georgia and Richmond, Virginia and letters (1861-1862) from Benjamin Mell while serving in Cobb's Legion near Richmond. Also includes land grants, account books, writings, and printed material. The collection contains some material relating to Thomas S. Mell, as treasurer of the Georgia State Teachers College (1927-1932) and general orders of the United Confederate Veterans.
